Compliments of the Day

"A nice word is always welcome," the female dealer said as she swapped into our poker table.

We picked up on that. "OK. You look very nice today," we told her. "You're being a complimentarian."

Being a what? Admittedly, that's a word we'd never heard until the last couple of weeks, much less used. The Southern Baptists have had an in-house debate for about a year about "complementarianism" - the religious idea that males and females have different roles which complement each other.

But did you notice how we changed the spelling in our first quote? We decided to endorse the practice of complimenting (with an I) other people. This is something both males and females can do - even in the middle of a tense poker game.

An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up. - Proverbs 12:25

It can be as simple as complimenting an opponent on a well-played hand. Or you can try what we've done recently - complimenting a player wearing an out-of-the-ordinary hat.

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. - Proverbs 16:24

But we'd put a small warning on this habit. Don't go over the top from complementarian to flatterer - using words of praise that you really don't mean.

A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth works ruin. - Proverbs 26:26

To put it another way: look for the good in others, as you look for good cards to play. It could make your next poker game more of a game, and less of a grind.

Poker Day 574: Race Day

Monaco had Formula 1. Indianapolis had IndyCar. Suburban Charlotte had NASCAR. And we had our own version of racing today - at the Jack Casino poker room. In fact, several races were in the cards....

BLINDS: 600/1,200/1,200 ante (Big Blind only)

IN THE POCKET: Q of hearts-Q of clubs

The Sunday brunch poker tournament has a deep stack - 25,000 chips for early birds. We built ours to 28,200 in the early going. But then setbacks knocked us down to 12,200 at the 90-minute first break. Now we have only 7,600 left, and are looking for something to start a rally. With players to our right at this table of eight raising to 3,200, this had better be it.

"I'm all-in," we say; "76 trombones led the big parade."

This reference sparked a discussion of Broadway musicals. We performed in this one in high school. A young man to our right knew right away it was The Music Man, because he'd seen the movie on cable TV.

But oh yes, the hand: two men across from us call. But the man to our immediate right then goes all-in as well - with a lot more chips than we have! This doesn't look good. A man across from us thinks for a long time, then folds. The musical buff to the right ponders, then calls.

Now it's show-and-tell time. The big re-raiser has.... 3-3! The musical fan went for it with 8-10!

"You mean I'm in the lead?!?!" we say with surprise as we show our cards. Suddenly this feels good, but anything could still happen....

ON THE FLOP: As-6s-9c

Thankfully, no one has an Ace. But the Music Man has a straight draw.

ON THE TURN: 4s

This is more trouble, because the opposing pair includes 3s. Can we dodge all the bullets?

ON THE RIVER: 2c

We do! The "76 trombones" turn into a full, quadrupled-up big band of 35,200 chips!

That started another of those amazing second-hour rallies for us. An all-in gamble with pocket 5's won a race. Q-7 in the Big Blind brought a 6-10 straight on the river. Add a heart flush, and we survived to the final table at 24,300!

Patiently waiting for good cards paid off there. A push with A-7 looked bad against A-K, but a 7 on the board brought a gain to 84,000. A-Q led to two pair on the flop, and he jumped to 208,000. A Big Blind win made our high chip mark 249,500!

With 28 people playing, the top three would earn money. With four players left, we still had 155,500 amid massive blinds and antes. All fours agree to pay a "Bubble Boy" $20 - and the ma who appeared likely to take that title then hit a series of big hands, to eliminate someone else.

After a few more minutes of play, that man suggested a three-way chop of the prize money. The man with a huge stack had been gunning for the win, but after some setbacks was ready to settle. Of course, we accepted as well.

After more than four hours of holiday weekend "work," all three of us took home $560. That's our biggest one-day payoff since 2015, our second cash in a row and our third in 11 tournaments this year. We praise God for the success He's providing!

MINISTRY MOMENT: We were saddened as we drove to the casino, due to news this weekend that a familiar voice from our old home area had died. Rod Bramblett of Auburn University sports was killed with his wife in a Saturday night SUV crash.

"The good news," we told a woman sitting next to us, "is that I believe in a resurrection of the dead."

The woman indicated she believes in that as well. We let it go there - but perhaps we should have probed deeper to see if she believes in Who will bring it.
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies...." - John 11:25
At the time when Jesus Christ walked the earth, many Jews (but not all) believed in a resurrection of the dead:
Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." - John 11:23-24
But Jesus went farther - declaring He was the resurrection. He did it in this section of the Bible with Lazarus (verses 43-44). And He plans to do it on a grander scale when he returns to Earth....
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. - John 14:3
Where will Jesus take the dead? Contrary to what you may have heard, it's not a place in heaven:
Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights in the day of battle. On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem... Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him. - Zechariah 14:3-5
Some believers in God had an understanding of His plan to save humankind, even before Jesus came the first time. The next time, there will be no doubt:
Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him.... - Revelation 1:7
If you're feeling down or depressed as the U.S. marks Memorial Day over the loss of a loved one, consider these Bible promises carefully. Jesus will come again, bringing a resurrection (actually more than one - check Revelation 20 for more about that). The dead will live again. What a wonderful time that will be!

ElderCare

The classic words of Doyle Brunson were part of the opening of every Poker After Dark program on NBC: "We don't quit playing because we get old; we get old because we quit playing."

A large number of "older people" (we'd guess age 50 or higher) play in our poker circles. Some of them have played for a long time, so they deserve being treated with caution. To borrow an old phrase, you should "respect your elders" at the table.

But we've been asking in several posts about another group of elders. These apparently are in heaven....

Surrounding the throne were 24 other thrones, and seated on them were 24 elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. - Revelation 4:4

Who are these people? Well, believe it or not, we don't think they are people. Verse 2 indicates they're in heaven. And Someone who came down from heaven once said....

No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven - the Son of Man. - John 3:13

So if they aren't humans who were "taken to heaven," who (or what) are they? The Bible admittedly doesn't offer much guidance about them. But we're led to conclude they're angels - perhaps a special high rank of angels. Look at what they get to do:

And the 24 elders, who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshiped God.... - Revelation 11:16

If this sounds dull and boring to you, consider this. They're at the throne of God - the One who created heaven and earth, and who is preparing a place for those who will believe in Jesus Christ!

In my father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. - John 14:2-3

The Bible indicates Jesus will come back to the area of Jerusalem (Zechariah 14:4) - stopping all rebellion and setting up the Kingdom of God on Earth. If that still doesn't interest you, consider this warning....

...That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. - Philippians 2:10-11

The Bible shows the worship of Jesus Christ will happen. Whether you like it or not. Wouldn't it be better to respect the "elder brother" and begin worshipping Him now?

Almost Kings

Pocket Kings look good to some poker players. But they're scary to others - because someone with an Ace might show them up on the flop.

But would you like to someday be a king? Our last post examined some interesting writing that indicates you can be. But as we looked closely at it, questions arose. Here's what we read:
And has made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. - Revelation 5:10 (KJV)
But then we backtracked and saw this....

And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the 24 elders fell down before the Lamb.... - Revelation 5:8 (NIV)

So what's going on? Is the future title of "king" only for some mysterious creatures in heaven?

We found the explanation is as simple as comparing Bible translations. Since we cited the New International Version in verse 8, let's keep reading it....

And they sang a new song: "You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, ad they shall reign on the earth." - Revelation 5:9-10

We emphasized a few key words here. The creatures and elders praise Jesus for purchasing men - as in human beings. A footnote in the New King James indicates some Greek versions of Revelation which have been handed down over time put the emphasis on humans, while others do not.

A check of numerous translations indicates most translate this section as giving the "kings and priests" title to humans. It fits better with other verses in Revelation - verses which explain how you can become a king:

To him who overcomes I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcome and sat down with my Father on his throne. - Revelation 3:21

These are words of a resurrected Jesus. He amazingly offers you the opportunity to be resurrected as well, and sit with Him! (We think Jesus would be the "Ace", overriding our King-ship.)

But as our title (borrowing from a rock band) indicates, there's something we must do. To borrow from an old spiritual, we must overcome. And....

To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations.... - Revelation 2:26

We overcome this world and our own sinful nature by doing the will of Jesus Christ. Discover that will by reading carefully through the first four books of the New Testament. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are known as the "gospels," telling the story of Jesus from conception to crucifixion to resurrection.

But we've left one question unanswered here. What about those "elders" mentioned in Revelation 5? We'll keep working on that for another post.

Poker Night 573: Waiting for My Dreamboat

For people of a certain age (like us), Wednesday night means discounts at Hollywood Casino Indiana. The hotel's dinner buffet is only five dollars! And the poker tournament is still the lowest price in the area at $70. Our goal was to win all that money, and maybe some more. But it's never easy....

BLINDS: 50/100

IN THE POCKET: K-8 offsuit

We won an early pot with hidden "trip 10's." But modest losses have brought us back to our starting level of 12,000 chips. The typical slow-arriving crowd means only six people are playing at the moment, and we're in the Small Blind. No one raises. We don't either. It's a big family pot....

ON THE FLOP: K-7-9

…and it's a big start for us. Holding top pair and playing first, we bet 150 to see who's serious about these cards. Most of the table isn't. But the man on the button is. He calls, and we're heads-up.

ON THE TURN: 7

Hmmm - the board pairs. Now we must slow down, because blinds are low and anybody could be speculating. We check, and our opponent bets 500. We wonder if our 8 really is a good enough kicker with two pair, but we call to find out.

ON THE RIVER: 6

We check again. Our opponent doesn't slow down - he now bets 1,000. What does that mean? His own three of a kind? An oddball straight? Or a semi-bluff with Ace high? Knowing what players tend to do here, we conclude it's the semi-bluff. So we call.

"I've got a King," we say.

The man next to us says nothing - except to turn over 6-6! He hit a full house on the river, and leaves other players stunned; otherwise we would have won.

The first hour was filled with setbacks like that for us. We dropped to about 6,000. But then in the last hand before Break 1, we matched Q-J against a big bettor with a Queen on the flop. He went all-in for 1,100 when an Ace appeared on the river. We feared the worst, but called because we were pot-committed - and were thrilled when he showed Q-8!

That comeback hand gave us 10,575. That launched a second-hour rally, where we won bigger pots. On a 15-player night, we reached the final table with 28,600, then had slightly less at Break 2.

The third hour was huge, as we received A-A and 10-10 in consecutive hands. They were enough to eliminate two players who pushed, and balloon us to 71,800 with five players left! Then Q-10 led to a disguised straight against another big stack - and we were in the 80,000 range!

Only the top two players would win money. But when the contest dropped to three and a low stack proposed "bubble" money for third, we agreed to it. We think we were in the chip lead at Break 3, with 80,800. But the same man proposed a three-way "chop" of the prize money. Since we have a real job and an early wake-up call, we accepted it.

The final result: three players winning $235. Friendly fist bumps and handshakes. A good night for the survivors - and praise to God from us for not only the big comeback, but our second cash win of 2019!

MINSTRY MOMENT: We still are labeled a "distinguished guest" on our poker receipt at Hollywood Casino. Our first dealer saw that and was puzzled. Then he started speculating.

"If you were a knight, I could go home and tell my friends I met a knight."

No, that's not us. But then we remembered: "A well-known book says I can be a king someday - a king and a priest."

Can you guess which book? Regular readers ought to know....
And has made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. - Revelation 5:10 (KJV)
We've heard ministers say through the years that this is a promise for believers who remain faithful to God until the end of their lives or the return of Jesus, whichever comes first. But as we're writing this, we notice something that could change that thinking. This is a "new song" (verse 9) - but who is singing it?
And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the 24 elders fell down before the Lamb.... - Revelation 5:8 (NIV)
This section of the Bible apparently is based on a lengthy vision that the apostle John saw (Revelation 1:10). But people are not necessarily saying these words! There are "four creatures" with four different faces (4:6-7). So who are the "elders?"

The Bible shows churches should have people with the title of Elder....
The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. - I Timothy 5:17
Yet we'd guess many more than 24 people have held the title "Elder" over about 2,000 years of church history. So why does the apostle's vision show only 24 - and are they in heaven now? We invite your comments on this; we'll offer our thoughts in a future post.

UPDATED POKER SCOREBOARD: 219 final tables in 573 games (38.2%) - 47 cashes. We're six for ten in making final tables so far this year!

Tight Vs. Might II

Our last post looked at the idea of playing poker aggressively - and whether a believer in God and Jesus Christ should do such a thing.

King David wrote psalms praising God for making him a strong fighter. And there were times long ago when God called on ancient Israel to go to battle against other countries. Here's one famous example....

Then the Lord said to Joshua, "See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men.... the wall of the city will collapse and the people will go up, every man straight in." - Joshua 6:2, 5

The walls "came a-tumbling down," to borrow from a classic song. But at least one fighter sinned against God in the process, so God did not grant victory in the next battle (Joshua 7:1-5). So one key issue in being aggressive (we're emphasizing poker here) is whether you're living properly under God's rules.

Another issue is self-defense. We go back to King David for this....

Contend, O Lord, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. - Psalm 35:1

"I will defend the Big Blind," we've said in a poker room more than once - trying to sound noble as we do. This brings up a key point: letting God fight your battles....

With him [the king of Assyria] is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles"... - II Chronicles 32:8

Examine yourself and pray carefully, to be sure God is on your side. Leaders of ancient Israel did this often, before taking cities or countries.

The problem with aggressive three-betting is that other poker players might have watched the same video you did. They'll over-aggressively four-bet, leading to a game of (to borrow from the judge on the People's Court) "Quien es mas macho?" That can be devastating, if you don't have the best hand.

In a similar way, Jesus didn't fight His arrest because He knew He had ultimate backing - which was part of His purpose for being on Earth in the first place:

Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than 12 legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way? - Matthew 26:53-54

The death of Jesus was planned long in advance, in Heaven. So was His resurrection. So is His return, promised throughout the Bible. You don't have to fight for it now (something attackers on mosques and synagogues sadly don't seem to grasp). Wait for the moment in God's timing, then seize upon it - whether you're in the Big Blind or the big moments of life.

Tight Vs. Might

If you gather with buddies for a friendly game of poker, that's one thing. If you try to be friendly in a big tournament, things might not always turn out well.

That's the position of poker pro and online coach Jonathan Little. He believes poker is a game of "aggression"- and the "tight straightforward" approach only works when your opponents aren't very good. Little recommends making a re-raise before the flop when your cards are in a "polarized range". And that includes hands as weak as 5-3 suited (check his chart).

Little says his approach will help you "steal pots that don't belong to you." OK, that might win - but is it right? Is there an ethical way to play successful poker? We don't mean cheating here - but doing things in a way that might set a good (and even godly) example.

Most Bibles don't have the word "aggression". But they do talk about fighting - and the verses admittedly might leave you confused. For instance….
Praise be to the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle. - Psalm 144:1
King David of Israel wrote these words, and he wasn't bragging. One top song of his day proclaimed he killed enemy forces by the tens of thousands  (I Samuel 18:7) - and he praised God for being able to do it! So how do we explain that, in light of these words?
Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place." - John 18:36
Some Christian groups take this verse as a complete ban on serving in the military. They claim "conscientious objector" status, if they must. That's because Jesus was talking here about a future "Kingdom of God" - future on earth, that is.
But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. - Matthew 6:33 (NASB)
We'll stop right here and ask a probing question. When you play poker, which kingdom are you "fighting for"? Is it your own - your bank account, or your buddies in a league? Or are you putting God's kingdom and righteousness first?

So that still leaves the question: how do you reconcile what King David wrote and what some modern-day Christians do? Offer your thoughts in our comments section, and we'll get back to this in a future post.

The Old Numbers Game

A recent post presented one winning poker player's opinion about why children should be taught the game. But there's one positive aspect she didn't mention - that poker can teach young people math skills.

We found a column explaining why mathematics matters in a poker room. For grade-schoolers, there's the obvious truth that a 10 is (worth) more than a 6 and that three of a kind is better than two.

But the math gets more complicated from there. For instance, did you know (based on our link) that a pocket pair turns into "trips" on the flop about 11.5 percent of the time?

This column reminded us that some people aren't always logical with their math skills. One example occurred only a couple of weeks ago. Consider the words of Jesus....

For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. - Matthew 12:40

Jesus was answered demands from some people for a "miraculous sign" (verses 38-39). He took them back to a classic Old Testament tale....

But the Lord provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights. - Jonah 1:17

(The Bible never calls the fish a "whale," but that's not our point here.)

By comparison, Jesus was talking about His death. After three days and three nights, He would be resurrected (16:21) - and the Bible records that actually happened (Luke 24:21 and other verses).

The really big problem (to borrow from a math-centered show on public TV) is that many people think Jesus died on "Good Friday" and came back to life on "Easter Sunday." Even with common core, that's bad math. That timeline only allows for one full day and two full nights.

Some Bible scholars try to explain this by saying part of a day counts as a day. Yet they never seem to apply that principle to another moment in the Bible....

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting 40 days and 40 nights, he was hungry. - Matthew 4:1-2

We've never found a Christian preacher who claims this fast was shorter than that - say, 28 days and 27 nights. So why do they condense it when it comes to Jesus's death and resurrection?

The short answer is: tradition - and much like not all math figuring is good, so not all traditions are good. We think the right answer is to start a new tradition. One that's biblically sound and mathematically accurate.

If you have fuzzy math when it comes to this, here's a chart that may help.sort things out. Search the Scriptures carefully with it. As some ministries like to say, "Good science supports the Bible" - and we think good mathematics and traditions will as well.

Much More Than 50 Cent

You can tell a younger poker player from an older poker player. The younger ones pronounce "50" as "fitty."

But joking aside, there's been a big feud in recent days between rap star 50 Cent and internet poker star Randall Emmett. Mr., uh, Cent claimed Mr. Emmett owed him one million dollars from years gone by, and made violent threats if the debt wasn't paid. Mr. Emmett claimed he had health problems which prevented him from paying the bill in full. But Mr. Cent posted on Twitter Monday morning:

got my money, so I have no problem with Randall Emmett, in fact I’m wishing him and his family a very blessed day.

😏
positive vibes now guys. LOL

So all's apparently well that ends well. But we have thoughts about both sides of this fuss - and both of them could apply to you as well.

To Mr. Emmett: How did this happen? Why would you leave a million-dollar loan unpaid for six years? A famous book warns....
The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. - Proverbs 22:7
If you're borrowing money to finance a poker habit, we dare to say you have two problems. You might be addicted to gambling, and you're putting yourself at the mercy of other people - people who may or may not be merciful toward you.
Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law. - Romans 13:8
To Mr. Cent: Why go public with a debt such as this? And make violent threats on social media on top of that? That same famous book warns....
Do not exploit the poor because they are poor.... - Proverbs 22:22
Roommates ran up big debts toward us many years ago. (This was before we started playing poker, and before the internet became common.) We didn't broadcast their names and amounts to the general public. If you're going to pronounce a "blessed day" on someone, maybe you should follow this advice:
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. - Matthew 5:7
So we've found no winners here. There's fault for both sides, if they wish to claim it. Do you agree or disagree?
